Energy Communities as a way to generate value
This article aims at talking about energy communities as a leading path to a sustainable energy future. I will provide a theoretical description of the theme and in the end, talk a bit about my project Eneregy to Community – E2C.
If I have to define the spirit behind this project I would refer to our first motto!
“Ready to win the race to a clean energy future!”
The project is based on the realization of energy communities with the aim of generating a good social impact. But first of all a description of the basis.
What is an Energy Community?
“An Energy Community is an independent Legal Entity producing and sharing renewable energy”. Deconstructing the definition step-by-step, the legal entity is the formal identity the Community will have. But how do you get until this point?
First of all, participation happens on a voluntary basis, but to constitute an energy community, it is necessary to have at least two legal entities, physically located within the area supplied by the same power station. So, for example, a neighbourhood and a school located close to them, or even a church, a shop, and so on and so forth. The only crucial element is that they must be supplied by the same primary cabin for electricity supply.
And of course, they need to have a generation plant, basically solar panels or wind turbines.
What is the difference with solar-panel installation?
Here comes the strength of an Energy Community: there is only the need for one generation plant, that you can install in the most suitable place to grant energy to all the members.
The concept of exclusive property is here cancelled, for a good purpose. If you only have your solar panels, you produce energy but most of them are excessive and you do not even consume it. The purpose of a Community in this sense is also the one of creating, and sharing therefore not wasting and being more efficient.
The crucial role of Communities
Communities play a very significant role in our society. I am talking very simply about the people who live in a defined space, for example, the inhabitants of a neighbourhood. We could talk a lot about it and the theme need to be further analyzed. However, it is important to acknowledge that communities generate value.
Think about energy, the neighbourhood that has its own independence and can easily generate what it needs. Not only it grants efficient use but has the possibility of being independent and generating. This last keyword represents an innovative point, indeed for the first time, people could own and share what is fundamental to their lives.
E2C comes into place
Energy to Community is the entity that grants the correct development of an energy community. As the name states, the objective is to grant access to energy to the community and makes sure they can demonstrate their value.
E2C was born thanks to the effort of four university colleagues and me during a didactic challenge in the field of energy transition. I always wanted to do something for the Earth and for the people. With energy Communities, this impact is maximized.
E2C has the aim of granting consulting over the realization of energy communities and finding out the best places and areas for realization. A catalyzer of a truly breakthrough energy transition process.
